Island of Lesvos crowned as EU Soil Mission Living Lab

The Mara-Mediterra partnership proudly announces the successful establishment of the Island of Lesvos as one of the 100 EU Soil Mission Living Labs. The Island of Lesvos in Greece is one of our pilot case studies (hotspots) of land and water degradation.

The Mara-Mediterra project coordinator, Dr. Vasileios Takavakoglou (SWRI) presented the interconnections between the Mara-Mediterra project and the Horizon Europe funded GOV4ALL project which led to this major achievement.

 

His presentation was made on the occasion of the Greek National Event entitled “Soil Mission and Living Labs Calls 2024”, which was organized by the American Farm School as part of the NATI00NS project in Thessaloniki, Greece on 21 May 2024.

Ms. Vagia Piteli from the PRAXI Network, the National Contact Point for the Soil Mission in Greece, provided information on open calls and new funding opportunities. Ms. Xristina Moutisia, Project Manager of the Innovation & Impact HUB, showcased the NATI00NS project, while Dr. Michael Katharakis, Founding Member and Manager of the Mediterranean Agrofood Competence Center (MACC), elaborated on the MACC Soil Living Lab and its initiatives in Crete. Ms. Elisavet Stella Papadopoulou, a researcher at the Innovation & Impact HUB, presented the ECHO Horizon Europe Project focusing on citizen science. Ms. Katerina Dourvanaki, agronomist at the American Farm School, introduced the KAEM Living Lab for olive oil and olives in Messinia. Lastly, Ms. Elizabeth Tzialla highlighted the actions of SEAL CYPRUS and the potential role of Cyprus in participating in an EU Soil Mission proposal.
