Spotlight on Organic Manure

Date

This clip features the testimony by farmer Lorenzo Guidalotti, who tills the land in Tuscany, Italy. It brings the spotlight on organic manure, one of the agro-ecological practices promoted by Mara-Mediterra.

Lorenzo Guidalotti is a young farmer who has been working in his family farm for over 10 years. They always produced drinking milk and more recently they developed other sectors such as “Cinta Senese” pigs breeding in the wild and the growing 5 hectares of vegetables. Lorenzo and his family grow various crops to feed their dairy cattle such as silage maize, forage and grain sorghum, forage wheat, barley and a mix of winter forages of legumes and cereals, and alfalfa.

Watch the farmer’s testimony on why he and his family have gradually changed their viewpoint with regard to livestock manure as a waste to be disposed of (and therefore a cost) to its agronomic valorization with considerable environmental and economic benefits, since they drastically reduced the use of synthetic fertilizers.

His testimony comes with subtitles in either English, French, Arabic, Greek or Turkish, which are the working languages in Mara-Mediterra’s 5 hotspots of land and water degradation.

The testimonial forms part of an initial set of real-life stories of working with Nature-based Solutions by farmers in Italy, Greece and Malta.
