The objective of the Mara-Mediterra Info-Day was to enable the participants who will be joining the Living Lab in Algeria to reach a common understanding of the Mara-Mediterra project’s objectives and expected outcomes. At the same time, the meeting served to better identify any potential risks or challenges that might impact of the foreseen outcomes.
In addition to representatives from the General Directorate of Forests, several other key stakeholders joined the event, including the Research Center in Physico-Chemical Analysis (CRAPC), the Thematic Research Agency in Science and Technology (ATRST), the Directorate General of Research and Technological Development (DGRSDT), the Water and Sanitation Company of Algiers (SEAAL) and the National Office of Sanitation (ONA).
Following on a welcome speech delivered by Dr. Nadjib Drouiche, Dr. Mustapha Adjadj, AMENHYD’s Teamleader, presented the Mara-Mediterra project. He outlined the Nature-based Solutions that are foreseen to be implemented in order to overcome the obstacles that have contributed to slowing down the success of Algeria’s Green Dam project, an ambitious afforestation project launched to combat desertification. The new approach will be based on the artificial creation of a micro-ecosystem at the level of each forest plant, the use of renewable energy, the valorization of wastewater treatment by-products and the use of digital monitoring tools.
Other presentations made during the event covered EU funded research and innovation programmes, the national initiative for the restoration of the Green Dam, and the valorization of wastewater from wastewater treatment plants.
The Info-Day in Algeria took place on 13 June 2022 at the premises of the agency ANVREDET, which is responsible for the valorization of research and technological development results. AMENHYD and ANVREDET co-sponsored the Info-Day.
